OK, so, its been raining here in NJ for the past few days, with a bit of chill in the air so I decided to use up my leftover spiral ham bone and make some Ham and Split Pea Soup.
Please do NOT expect a romantic night after this soup, if you want to understand why, read here. I am submitting this soup to Debbie for
You can read all about this event at Debbies blog
right here. Ham and Split Pea Soup. Adapted from Cooks Illustrated. Begin your soup by making a ham stock. Place your ham bone, 3 quarts water, and bay leaves in a large pot covered over medium heat and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat, and simmer 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Remove the ham meat and bone from stock. Add your split peas

and thyme, simmer bout 45 minutes. Meanwhile shred some ham meat into bite size pieces
and set aside. Toss the rind and bone. While the ham is simmering, heat oil in large skillet. Add onions, celery, and carrots

Saute till vegetables are browned, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and add the butter, garlic, and sugar.

Cook for 30-35 minutes until deeply browned, set aside. Add your sauteed veggies, potatoes,

Medium dice those potatoes first, and shredded ham to soup.
Simmer until the potatoes are tender and the peas dissolve and thicken,20 more minutes. Season with pepper to taste. Ladle into bowls and serve.

Drizzle with balsamic if youd like. Delicious soup, worth the long wait.

You'll love this one.

You know this is my favorite. I hope there is some in the freezer for me. I have 2 ham bones in the freezer, will have to bust one out..
ReplyDeleteI haven't had split pea soup in FOREVER...yours looks so good!!!!! I'm thinking I might have to make a quick stop at the store after my son's soccer game this morning!
ReplyDeleteI never really appreciated pea soup as a kid, but as an adult, it's a different story. I'm saving this recipe. Very good with a spoonful of sherry stirred in.....
ReplyDeleteAw thank you! S has been after me to find a split pea and hame soup recipe for him! As soon as it cools down out here I'll make this.
ReplyDeleteDonna, Donna, what are we going to do with you? Okay...don't answer that!
ReplyDeleteRecipes are great as usual,...well, I guess... I got a bit distracted there for a moment!
I loved your answers to the questionnaire!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, first one more question: is it livin' in Jersey that brings all this out in you? :-)
ReplyDeleteSecond, I have always loved! split pea soup and this looks scrumptious!
I love black licorice ;)
ReplyDeleteThe pea soup must be a nice soup to eat *slurp*
I can think of a few things to do while that soup is cooking.....toast me up a piece of baguette to go with mine!
ReplyDeleteYou're crazy as usual, ha, ha,
ReplyDeletebut your recipes are just as good.

ReplyDeleteDonna, I was visiting Rico's blog just a few minutes ago. He is a hunk, oui? Love your answers - you always make me smile.
ReplyDeleteI need this soup. I've suffering from TMJ and made split pea soup the other day. Your photo turned out great. I think it's really hard to photograph soup and have it look good.
Sam
This looks so comforting right now...I love ham & split pea soup...which I had a big bowl right now! Yummmmm...mmmm, Brad Pitt.
ReplyDeleteExtremely witty and I loved the soup to who cares for a nice romantic outing with a soup like that, funny you like George Clooney, many people say I look like him when I don't colour my hair...OOopps did I say I colour my hair...darn ah well too late. at least I'm not bald yet (no offence to bald people ..k?) thanks for the intro Donna you cool as a cucumber :) xx
ReplyDeleteI'm of Dutch heritage, and pea soup is like the national dish there (or herring!). Guess what veggie I cannot eat? They will use ham or Mettwurst in theirs, and Mettwurst is a nasty tasting sausage if there ever was one! I should have been born Polish!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think I make ham just to have the bone left over. Love the recipe. Never sprinkled some balsamic into it... must do that. We are cool (and dry - please send us your rain - been almost three weeks). Love the questionnaire answers... my morning smile with my coffee.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE split pea soup. Whenever we have ham....I always take the bone and stick it in the freezer (sometimes I am not ready to make the soup nor in the mood for it) This is also good with the navy bean too. Mmmmm, now I am craving ham Donna!
ReplyDeleteSoup looks great. I'm sure Rico didn't expect these answers to his questions ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the soup. Add some crusty bread, nice chilled white wine...I'm ready!
ReplyDeleteI could totally go for some good soup at the moment. After the dessert-filled cruise, I'm craving lighter dishes!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you loved Kiefer as well. He is my older-man-crush. I would do him in a second. Or less. Although 24 didn't really do it for me this season. I prefer the edgier, less-depresed and mentally ruined Kiefer.
Ham & split pea soup is probably one of my favourite things - probably because I have such wonderful childhood memories of my mom's version, which is much like yours. I've never been able to replicate it, however. Looks good, as usual, Donna-FFW!
ReplyDeleteHow good is......the soup, of course. The soup!
ReplyDeleteOh my Mistress! And he thought I evaded his questions! Yours of course are way more entertaining than mine! I bow down to you, and please hurt me, hurt me with some hot soup! :)
ReplyDeleteI am always so impressed by your...um...neverending repertoire in the...kitchen! Great soup!

LOL. You crack me up!!
ReplyDeleteI like peas, but don't have split pea soup as much as I should and I know it's good.
Key West..I love Key West. I have been to Fantasy Fest a few times!!! CRAZY CRAZY times!!
ReplyDeleteFun answers and I want a bowl of that soup! YUMMY!
ReplyDeleteYour answers cracked me up, Donna. This soup looks totally awesome. I'm a huge fan of split pea soup. I can even eat it in the dead of summer. However, it never gets that hot in San Francisco, so I guess my ability to eat soup when it's hot out doesn't really matter. Okay, that was a silly tangent.
ReplyDeleteOk Donna... you can have all the other guys... but Kiefer is MINE!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a very hearty pea soup. I really enjoy soup on a cold day. Your answers to the questions were great Donna!!! I can't stand black licorice either...but I'll take shoe string red!!!! BTW, you asked the other day if I prefered the banana muffins to the banana cake I make..NO...I LOVE that banana cake!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was scrolling real fast through all the blogs I follow, and as usual yours caught my eye right away, I knew it was you. You are frakking hilarious!!!! And my birthday is September 4th, btw. The soup looks delicious! I must say you a very talented!!!!!
